For a lot of people, the best way to improve their life and finances is through education. It’s a fact, though, that in America we spend around $600 billion on education each year while many students still struggle to get an education that allows them to achieve their potential.
Luckily, Steve Harvey and NBC are trying to change that with the Steve Harvey Scholarship for Students of Color which will award over 1 million dollars this school year to high-achieving African American students studying STEM or Math.
Originally, the Steve Harvey Scholarship Fund was established in 2005 to help African American students with the high cost of a college education. Since the creation of the foundation, $1.5 million have been awarded to deserving students, yet over $50 million have been requested.
Now, with NBC’s support and resources, they will be able to give out student grants worth $5k per year for up to four years.
A total of $10 million will be used to award over 100 scholarships this school year, with the amount increasing as more is donated. The goal is to make sure that students of color have the opportunity to get a great education and reach their full potential.
The curriculum of the Steve Harvey Scholars Foundation focuses on STEM fields including biology, chemistry, computer science and physics. However, they also accept applications for other majors such as engineering, robotics and genetics.
Steve Harvey Scholarship Requirements
To be eligible, students must be at least 16 years old and a high school senior who will graduate no later than spring of 2022. They must also be African American/Black, a U.S. citizen, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, plan to enroll in a full-time STEM or math program at an accredited two or four year college or university in the fall of 2016 and reside in one of the 50 states within the United States.
The scholarships will be delivered in four installments and students can receive up to $5,000 per year for a maximum of four years.
It’s been over a decade since the Steve Harvey Scholarship was established and it has given scholarships to thousands of students. This amount is staggering and with NBC’s support, it’s certainly what many of these students need to improve their lives and futures.
